Reeces

For the section of our title sequence where Doug waits for/gets on the train we have decided to film at New Eltham train station due to the fact it is close by and so is easily accessible by all the whole production company.

New Eltham Railway Station
Footscray Road
Eltham
London SE9 2EH

For the part in this section that Doug actually gets on the train and sits down we are also going to be filming at New Eltham Station due to the incoming of trains constantly this will then enable us to film this section over and over to ensure we have got all the footage we need when editing.

For the beginning of the title sequence it opens in a mental hospital and so we needed a plain white room with possible lighting to be able to create the full affects to ensure we get the shots we need to, this is why we have chosen to film in the studio next to our media room at school as this enables us to use the lighting equipment, be in a plain white room and have the added benefit of the white backing screen.

For the section when Doug begins his flashbacks we have chosen to film in Jen's house in New Barn as we can all access it and there is an appropriate room in her house that we can use to rough it up and make it look like Doug's run down apartment.

Casting & Auditions

The actor we as a production company have  chosen to play the role of Doug is Dan Hughes.Dan understands the task we have been set to do and is willing to put great effort into his performance. Even though Dan is only 18 we feel he is of the appropriate age that we need for the role as he is a diverse character that we can easily change the look of to make him seem 'rough'. In this photo to the right he is wearing a suit he may be wearing when filming our title sequence.

The actor we as a production company have chosen to play the role of Winston is Rhys Gennery, although only a young age of 17 we feel with the right team we can make him seem older than he is, he also possesses a lot of facial hair when it is grown which we feel is very appropriate for the role of a detective. Rhys knows the storyline well due to being apart of Intensity Productions himself which is very useful as it saves time when filming is put into place. He too is wearing a possible suit option for his scenes in Intellectual.

We filmed Rhys walking down a hallway as part of  his audition, this may seem like a very simple task but considering this is Rhys' main task in the film along with just having to sit quietly on a train we felt this was satisfactory enough to see if he was appropriate for the part.

Costume Description of Characters

Before the main character, Doug, takes the pill to improve his intelligence, his dress sense was very scruffy and he wasn't too conscious on how he looks. Loose t-shirt and baggy jeans is a stereotypical dress sense for an individual who doesn't care about how they are seen to others who are experiencing a tough and troubled life.
After the pill kicks in and Doug's intelligence increases, his view on life instantly changes. Doug becomes sophisticated and smart and cares very much about how he looks, gaining arrogance. A sharp, navy suit and a crisp white shirt shows Doug's rise from low to high.
The detective who is seen on the train, Winston, is a stereotypical detective who dresses in stereotypical detective clothing such as dark smart clothing. A black trench coat and a dark suit instantly shows to the audience who Winston is.

Edit of Colour and Rain

To be able to make our thriller title sequence the best we can we decided it would be a good idea to play around on after effects and see what impact some of the effects have on building suspense. We just took a basic clip from youtube and added the effect of rain and we also attempted to change the colouring of the image as well as the contrast and saturation. Of course this was just a first attempt but after we have practiced using after effects we feel using these effects of on our final title sequence will add to the atmosphere we are going to try to create.

Different Frame Shots in Parity

I have captured every different frame in the Parity clip, from this me Rhys and Jen are going to remake this Parity to enhance our skills in using the camera to use different camera angles effectively to create an effect that will benefit our own title sequence.

Film Name

The name of our film is going to be INTELLECTUAL as the film is based around a man who gains intelligence by taking a pill and commits a crime. Although we are obviously not going to be promoting our film we thought it would be an added feature to have a proper title done for our title sequence. The lines in the background are train tracks and there is a train placed on the tracks, this represents the main aspect and mystery of our thriller and the writing is bold but very sketchy giving it a mysterious feel to it.

Films of Influence

In order for us to be able to put together an idea for our title sequence we had to watch and review many thrillers to be able to take pieces from some of these films to create our own title sequence of a thriller. After reviewing many thrillers we came together as a group and have decided that these 4 films to the right are the main films that have influenced our idea of the film Intellectual. The reasonings behind this are as follows: Inception is based around a mans journey to get back to who he truly is and that is what the man in our film is trying to do. Limitless involves a man taking a pill and becoming smarter and we have also incorporated this into our thriller. The Taking of Pelham 123 is a film based around a man hijacking a train and this is what the man in our film does. The Matrix has a lot of intense interrogation/interview/meetings scenes which our film also has.

Basic Story Line - Review of our 2 minute Sequence

Link to plot in video:
http://jennnifersmedia.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/our-thriller-pitch-jennifer-robinson.html

Basic Story Line:
Opens in a mental hospital meeting with a doctor reviewing man's progess. Flash backs in mans head filming from his view point. Shows the man take a pill at home he passes out in front of the tv, wakes up in front of countdown being on and it show hes become smarter from the fact hes getting all the answers right. He packs a bag and walks out the house, walks to station. Walks on a train with the bag he sits down. Shot shows a mysterious man sitting across from him on a train (not revealed but this is the detective following him).

Reviewing our 2 minute sequence:
After losing our original footage we have realised that this is a problem within our production company and so we quickly attempted to re film in school but due to not having the correct locations needed to film in our 2 minute sequence is not very good, also we have realised dued to the jumping in the scenes our footage is very discontinuity.

Narratives Animation

Omniscient:

Restricted:

Linear & Non-Linear

Our film is going to follow a non-linear narrative meaning that the events are not necessarily going to be in chronological order, this is because the film starts off in the mental hospital and flash backs take place throughout the film.

Sub-Genres of a Thriller Animation

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Part 4:

Part 5:

Enigma Code Animation

After researching into what and enigma code is and what impact an enigma code has on a film, a thriller especially we have decided that we do not just have one enigma code as there are many questions our audience will be asking themselves whilst watching our film Intellectual and some of these questions are:

  • Why has he taken the pill?
  • What is he going to do?
  • Why is he in the hospital?
  • What is the man doing on the train?

BFFC

I went onto the official BBFC website to research into different certificates of films. I looked at the extent of what was allowed in the films and the type of audience they attract. As a group we decided that our thriller title sequence will be a 12A as there is mild references to sex and drugs, and strong language at times. We decided this as this will open up our film to a wider audience as it means children under 12 will be allowed to watch this as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Audience Research Statistics

FIGHT CLUB

By looking at this chart I have come to the conclusion males between the ages 18-29 have the highest audience that watch the thriller film Fight Club. Typical interests of men between this age range include exercising, clothing, women, their career etc.
18 year old male - 29 year old male

LIMITLESS

Again from this chart I have concluded that 18-29 year old males are the main audience for Limitless the film.

SHUTTER ISLAND
Yet again I have concluded that the highest audience rating Shutter Island is males between the ages of 18-29.

CONCLUSION OF RESEARCH

After looking into 3 thriller films on imdb and looking at the user rating charts I have concluded that the main audience that directors and production companies target when creating a thriller film is males between the ages of 18-29. This makes sense as most of the time this is the age range of the main male role in thrillers, as well as the attractive female co-star so this may also be an attraction for males to thrillers. Men between these ages tend to be quite physically fit and career forward, so these males most likely see themselves as quite strong which is what the male leads in thrillers tend to see themselves like so this may be a reason why men of this age range are the main target audience for thrillers.

Dexter Original - Remake

This is the original dexter clip that we were shown in a lesson that we have remade, but instead of copying it exactly we have put our own spin on it due to prop issues. For our first attempt of filming this went ok but we hope that with practice our production and filming skills will develop for our final title sequence.

Se7en Remake

By remaking this title sequence, it showed us the importance of the titles that need to be added to the sequence for legal reasons and simply respect to the actors. Also the importance of sound and effects added along with the titles and images, this increases the intensity of the building effect of suspense which is needed for the thriller
